The Institute for Movement Analysis (IMA) was founded in 1994 in Switzerland by Cary Rick, Board Certified Dance / Movement Therapist (BC-DMT) of the American Dance/Movement Therapy Association (ADTA). The institute standardizes new methodic developments and is the sole organization authorized by the founder, Cary Rick, to offer approved training in the method, certify qualified movement analysts and register trainers and superivisors.
Training programs in this method, have been held in German in Zurich, Vienna, Munich, and, in English, in Lisbon. The trainees receive a diploma issued by the Institute qualifying them officially as Movement Analyst, IMA. A further degree of qualification through practice and supervision entitles movement analysts to apply for official registration at the Institute as Movement Analyst, IMAR. Registration is a prerequisite for the participation in further training programs for supervisors or trainers. The institute also offers introductory workshops, seminars in continuing education, and yearly cycles of group supervision.
Movement analytic research focuses on body movement as a psychomotoric medium of personal action in everyday life. The Institute supports research projects of diplomees. Punctual research symposiums and conferences are documented in publications. Movement analytic case studies offer further research sources.
